This episode I am pleased to have Chris Trapper in the studio for an interview and performance. He was unable to come in a couple of months ago as a family emergency prompted the cancellation of a few dates of his tour, which included his appearance on this show. Now Chris is back on the road and after a great show at Mick's, he stopped by the studio the next morning for coffee and music on Worlds of Wayne. Unfortunately, I was a bit under the weather and as you will see, had absolutely no voice. 

Regardless, it turned out just fine and Chris played a few tunes and talked about his current tour. To be honest, for the past 3 months, I have been listening to his records "Hey You" and "Songs From The Middle Of The World" just about non-stop. Something which I have had the pleasure of doing with studio guests only a couple of times.

If you have never heard of this fellow Chris Trapper, then you will probably recognize his voice as soon as he starts singing. His songs have appeared in several movies, TV and radio. He was in a band called the Pushstars. They were kinda a big deal. Now he is on another solo tour crossing the country bringing his fans his amazing brand of music. Click below for more info.

The Toy Drive for Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is back! Since 2003, Omaha rockabilly musician Larry Dunn has organized a toy drive for the children of the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. According to the 2000 census, Pine Ridge’s Lakota Sioux community is one of the most poverty stricken communities in the United States. The children of the reservation are desperately in need of some sunshine and cheer, especially during a time of cold, harsh winds and immense desolation like winters on the reservation can be. the hereafter is the music project of singer/songwriter john elliott. it has been called "post-seinfeld, post-9/11 eyebrow rock" and john's songwriting has garnered comparisons to paul simon (among others) in the press. john grew up in minnesota listening mostly to michael jackson, guns n' roses and bon jovi (later, bruce springsteen and bob dylan). he started to play guitar when he was ten, taught himself to play the piano and sang in various choirs. john is now perpetually on the road and in his honda civic, writing songs and playing shows. as a result of television and internet exposure (and lots of touring), the hereafter has developed a scattered (and growing) international following. anyone and everyone who plays at a show or on a recording is a member of the hereafter. the current core is bryan dobbs on bass and various instruments and mike schadel on drums. additional members include, but are not limited to: andy featherston, evan endicott, ryan zwahlen, eli bolin, raina rose, kristen eppley, deemo, pickles, stinky john, dykel, carter dewberry, sick, kenny cline, lee overtree, drew callander, gautham prasad (mime) and jay johnson.

This episode Adam Marsland joins me in the studio to talk about his current tour, new record, and performs a few acoustic songs for your listening pleasure.

BIO:

Recently described in SPIN magazine as "a high-energy cross between Brian Wilson, Paul Stanley, and Elton John,” Adam Marsland's pop adventurism, brash vulnerability and stubborn idealism have not earned him the record sales of his L.A. contemporaries Weezer (with whom he once shared rehearsal space) or the cult following of Wondermints or The Negro Problem (both of whom he has performed with), but he has had one of the more prolific and intriguing music careers of the last 10 years.

A talented singer, arranger, performer, multi-instrumentalist and "one of the most gifted songwriters to come out of the west coast in a long time" (Time Out-NY), Marsland has pulled off rock, punk, baroque pop, soul and alt-country through the course of seven albums and 22 tours. When his label collapsed on the week of the release of his band's third CD, he went totally underground, touring alone for 2 1/2 years straight and selling thousands of albums out of the back of a 1994 Toyota Tercel. More recently, thanks to the advent of myspace, a jaw-dropping band that includes a bonafide pop legend, and a tour-de-force live album of similarly overlooked but worthy Beach Boys songs, Marsland's smartass-punk-meets-music-geek songs and persona have attracted a new audience.

Most recently, he played guitar and keyboards side by side in studio and onstage with Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers Hal Blaine and Don Randi and legendary guitarist Jerry Cole in recording sessions recreating '60s hits they originally played on for the soundtrack of the upcoming Shawn Bryant-produced documentary Makaha. His music began to be used more frequently in TV and film, including for the Fall 2007 season MTV Road Rules, Lisa Williams: Life Among The Dead, Scott Baio Is 46 And Pregnant as well as the Sci-Fi channel original film The Headless Horseman. An instrumental version of his song "Burning Me Out" was used as the end theme for I Know My Kid's A Star on VH-1.

In 2008 Adam completed his return to full-time music-making with a 20 track album called "Daylight Kissing Night - Adam Marsland's Greatest Hits," released on March 18, 2008. With a artist-breaking $5.99 list price and several new recordings included, the album was his first marketed exclusively to the retail chain since his Big Deal days, and was the subject of an intense word-of-mouth campaign among Adam's fan base. The CD immediately sold out across the U.S. and reached 17 on Amazon's rock chart, followed by a traditional media campaign and a 40-date national tour in the summer. Writing and rehearsals are also underway for a new studio album, his first in four years.

Tony Lange  - coordinator of the Mid American Music Festival joins me in the studio to talk about this groundbreaking Omaha event and how he has designed it to showcase bands throughout the region. We talk a bit about how it was put together, the nomination process, as well as address some obstacles that had to be overcome to pull off this type of event. We also showcase a couple bands that will be performing out of the 150+ registered over the 4-day event.

This episode I interview Vivian Campbell  - Guitarist for Def Leppard. This iconic rock band is currently on tour supporting a new album of all original material called "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge".

Songs on this episode are a bit nostalgic for me. The opening song is from one of my favorite local bands of all time - Oil. I see members of this group around town sometimes and I always remember having such a great time listening to their stuff back in the day. I also play a couple of old Five Story Fall songs. “New Dog, Old Tricks” recaptures and reinvents two songs co-written with ex-bandmate Scott Melott. Look for a hauntingly desperate but utterly timely delivery of “Miles City,” a song so cloaked in despair that it clings to the listener long past the last note. The frustrated communicator comes out in “Walls Come Down,” a moody piece with a pop/rock edge. Both songs represent the versatility of Gibson’s songwriting prowess and underscore the “huge emotional growth” she’s undergone since the Groobees disbanded. “New Dog, Old Tricks” reflects what others will say has been a circuitous route to her own good fortune, but Gibson has gotten there, nonetheless, and listeners will be thankful for it.

In this episode, I wanted to showcase a few artists that will be coming to Mick's Music Bar here in Omaha. A couple of these artists will be stopping by the studio the day of their show to perform a couple in studio songs and chat about their respective tours.

But what I realized is, that locally, this doesn't do anything to help promote the show here in Omaha. So, I brought in my friend Michael Campbell (Owner of Mick's Music Bar) and we put together a show that would give you a little preview of what to expect from these fine performers. This way, you can hear the music, then see them live at the show this weekend.

I would encourage everyone who loves quality music (and if you listen to this podcast then you probably do) to check out Mick's schedule and stop in for some great performances. Many of the artists that he books are extremely popular on either coast and tour nationally, so I am hoping that we are a cool enough town to show the same kind of support. Get off your asses and hear what you have been missing.

2 shots gin
1 shot lemon juice
1 tablespoon sugar
lots of ice
---put into shaker and shake the shit out of it to dissolve the sugar. Strain into collins glass filled with ice.

---Add 3 oz of club soda. Garnish with slice of lemon. Enjoy.

Darren Keen joins me in the studio with a round of Tom Collins for this latest episode and brings a demo of his new record. We talk about how this local musician did things his own way and took his act, The Show Is The Rainbow all over the world and back. This one man show consists of Keen, his computer, and a video screen. He creates all his music and performs to tracks live while projecting his own home made video behind him.

His show is known for its artistic craziness with Keen sometimes sporting a shirtless chest and a single mic while engaging the audience with his beats and thrashing movements in front of his videos as he explores the deepest connection between himself and his music. A TSITR show can, and sometimes does, involve some levels of nudity, bloodshed, altered state of minds, screaming, dancing, bewilderment and most often enjoyment.

We explore subjects such as touring, the state of our local music scene, recording, hookers, blow, and pregnant whores.

You might remember him from a little band from Arizona called the Refreshments, but for the last 10 years, it's been Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers that have been taking fans by storm. He is returning to the Big O on July 10th and once again rockin' the Waiting Room in support of "Turbo Ocho," an album where the band holed up in a house in Mexico to write and record 8 songs in 8 days.

Speaking of storms, locals may know that Omaha also got rocked by a severe storm the other night. Never have seen anything like that in my life. Fucking maddness!

Scooter chicks are hot. Scooter rallies are the most fun you can have on two wheels. This episode I talk a bit about the scooter rally Laurie and I recently attended. We had a blast. There is actually no documented footage of the elusive "T-Mac" as he has become known in certain elitist circles...Legends abound about this writer, blogger and music aficionado, some say there are no known photos of him as he thinks pictures could "steal his soul," others say that he has been seen paling around with Warren Buffet and Bono at Sunday morning brunches at the Del, still others claim he isn't even real at all...One thing is sure, I managed to lure Tim into my studio with promises of warm delicious coffee and good conversation...The plan worked, though I was told - "No photos"...We talk about music journalism, what's on our iPods, the dirty business of interviews and play lots of great music...So sit back and enjoy learning more about Omaha's true "Man of Mystery"...

In memory:
A couple hours after publishing this episode, I received a call from my dear friend Mark Peterson who was in a band with me for several years called the Cocktosens. His wife Beth Peterson had been battling complications with a brain tumor and passed away this morning. I can't tell you how sad I am. In fact, I'm finding it difficult to believe. She was  a great friend and I have to admit that after the band stopped playing we all went our own ways and spent the past few years with little contact. I enjoyed moments with Mark and Beth that I will never forget and some extremely happy times as close friends. My heart and sympathies go out to Mark and  Beth's families.  She will be missed and remembered for all the fun and joyful times she brought her friends and those around her.

He has been touring for years and has a killer band behind him and is keeping the Rockabilly banner flying high all over the world. A Christmas Carol!
Well, we did it. Dubbing ourselves the Empty Bottle Theatre Group, I assembled a cast of my closest friends to perform something that I have wanted to do for a long time, a live, old-time radio serial. When I asked everyone if they were interested, I got back an enthusiastic response, but since everyone was so busy this season, we had to improvise. So here is the theme, some characters were changed around and everyone got an un-edited script. It was one I found online that was used in Orson Well's original radio drama. Everyone was responsible for editing their own lines and could do whatever they wanted. We got together and ran through one scene, changed a few characters off the cuff, cracked open a few bottles of wine and ran with it.

So what you are hearing is a completely un-rehearsed, ad libbed version of A Christmas Carol. You can tell that as it nears the end of the show, we all are getting drunker and drunker...

I did very little editing and we all just had a blast. Granted MY ACCENTS ARE HORRIBLE, but it was all in good fun. You can hear us laughing in the background and several times, we almost couldn't contain ourselves as everything was done impromptu, which resulted in much spontaneous laughter.

A big thanks to Gary Dring from the Clever Little Pod podcast, my friend from the UK. He was kind enough to record the narration for the show. It was a tragic week last week. Our city is stunned by the violence that happened at the Westroads Mall here in Omaha Nebraska and are still trying to make some sense out of it. It's not the only time this year that our community has suffered a loss due to gun violence, but on a scale like this and with no apparent cause or motive, it is truly heartbreaking.

So many lives affected by this. Families rocked with suffering. It was a place where anyone could have been, it always seemed so safe. This show is dedicated to those suffering. I don't know if I said anything very profound, but it is a medium I have to pay tribute with.

I wish all those that lost someone this year due to senseless violence will find peace somehow...

It's December already and things are gearing up for the Christmas season. This episode I take a little doctor visit as I seek medical help for my strep throat. Korey Anderson also stops by the studio and records a couple of songs for a Worlds of Wayne exclusive.
