Matt Whipkey in the studio! Showcasing songs from his new solo record. Here is a excerpt from a recent article in the City Weekly...

"The disc itself finds Whipkey dealing with broken relationships and the drawn out loneliness one might feel when unable to find anywhere to fit in (see especially the closer âNo Place In This World,â an up tempo rocker that reveals Whipkeyâs subject isolated and alone, propped up and animated by soaring, well-placed harmonica wails). Whipkey admitted that he was working under the influence of the songwriting of Dylan and Springsteen, especially taking into account the latterâs four-track masterpiece of an album, âNebraska.â
Over a drink or two at the Barley Street, Whipkey was obviously very proud of his latest album and was eager to show off the finished product â each of which comes with a one-of-kind Polaroid picture made into a sleeve for the liner notes â to his friends at the bar. He also said that his CD release party next Saturday at the Waiting Room features a special reunion of his former band Anonymous American."

On this episode of Worlds of Wayne I welcome Lauren Mulderrig. Currently on tour with band mate and guitarist Alex Barnett, she is making her way across the country and stopped off in Omaha to play a show at Mick's. Turns out it was the last show Mick's would have as the place changed ownership shortly after. We will miss that place.

Alex is also a guitarist in the hardcore band Stick To Your Guns and we play a tune at the end of the episode from them.

Omaha musician and local legend Dereck Higgins joins me on the show to talk about his colorful musical upbringing. He's played virtually all styles of music and has been a pioneer in the Omaha music scene. From Jazz to punk, Dereck has played it all and experienced what it's like to be the only black man in a rock and roll band in the Midwest. Times have changed and Dereck is now playing in the Saddle Creek Records band Son Ambulance, as well as pursuing his own music as well as working in film.

He's also one of the nicest cats I've ever met.

This episode I am pleased to have Chris Trapper in the studio for an interview and performance. He was unable to come in a couple of months ago as a family emergency prompted the cancellation of a few dates of his tour, which included his appearance on this show. Now Chris is back on the road and after a great show at Mick's, he stopped by the studio the next morning for coffee and music on Worlds of Wayne. Unfortunately, I was a bit under the weather and as you will see, had absolutely no voice.

Regardless, it turned out just fine and Chris played a few tunes and talked about his current tour. To be honest, for the past 3 months, I have been listening to his records "Hey You" and "Songs From The Middle Of The World" just about non-stop. Something which I have had the pleasure of doing with studio guests only a couple of times.

If you have never heard of this fellow Chris Trapper, then you will probably recognize his voice as soon as he starts singing. His songs have appeared in several movies, TV and radio. He was in a band called the Pushstars. They were kinda a big deal. Now he is on another solo tour crossing the country bringing his fans his amazing brand of music. Click below for more info.

It's the first Christmas themed show of the year and it's a very special one. Read below to learn more about this toy drive and how you can help make some amazing kids very happy...

The Toy Drive for Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is back! Since 2003, Omaha rockabilly musician Larry Dunn has organized a toy drive for the children of the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. According to the 2000 census, Pine Ridgeâs Lakota Sioux community is one of the most poverty stricken communities in the United States. The children of the reservation are desperately in need of some sunshine and cheer, especially during a time of cold, harsh winds and immense desolation like winters on the reservation can be. The majority of gifts for the children are collected at benefit concerts put on by Omaha-area musicians. READ MORE HERE

This episode I have John Elliot in for an interview and in studio performance. I fell in love with his stuff after he sent me a couple mp3s. His performance at Mick's was incredible and if you get the chance, GO SEE HIM. Here is some info on him and his band the Hereafter:

the hereafter is the music project of singer/songwriter john elliott. it has been called "post-seinfeld, post-9/11 eyebrow rock" and john's songwriting has garnered comparisons to paul simon (among others) in the press. john grew up in minnesota listening mostly to michael jackson, guns n' roses and bon jovi (later, bruce springsteen and bob dylan). he started to play guitar when he was ten, taught himself to play the piano and sang in various choirs. john is now perpetually on the road and in his honda civic, writing songs and playing shows. as a result of television and internet exposure (and lots of touring), the hereafter has developed a scattered (and growing) international following. anyone and everyone who plays at a show or on a recording is a member of the hereafter. the current core is bryan dobbs on bass and various instruments and mike schadel on drums. additional members include, but are not limited to: andy featherston, evan endicott, ryan zwahlen, eli bolin, raina rose, kristen eppley, deemo, pickles, stinky john, dykel, carter dewberry, sick, kenny cline, lee overtree, drew callander, gautham prasad (mime) and jay johnson.

This episode Adam Marsland joins me in the studio to talk about his current tour, new record, and performs a few acoustic songs for your listening pleasure.

BIO:

Recently described in SPIN magazine as "a high-energy cross between Brian Wilson, Paul Stanley, and Elton John,â Adam Marsland's pop adventurism, brash vulnerability and stubborn idealism have not earned him the record sales of his L.A. contemporaries Weezer (with whom he once shared rehearsal space) or the cult following of Wondermints or The Negro Problem (both of whom he has performed with), but he has had one of the more prolific and intriguing music careers of the last 10 years.

A talented singer, arranger, performer, multi-instrumentalist and "one of the most gifted songwriters to come out of the west coast in a long time" (Time Out-NY), Marsland has pulled off rock, punk, baroque pop, soul and alt-country through the course of seven albums and 22 tours. When his label collapsed on the week of the release of his band's third CD, he went totally underground, touring alone for 2 1/2 years straight and selling thousands of albums out of the back of a 1994 Toyota Tercel. More recently, thanks to the advent of myspace, a jaw-dropping band that includes a bonafide pop legend, and a tour-de-force live album of similarly overlooked but worthy Beach Boys songs, Marsland's smartass-punk-meets-music-geek songs and persona have attracted a new audience.

Most recently, he played guitar and keyboards side by side in studio and onstage with Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers Hal Blaine and Don Randi and legendary guitarist Jerry Cole in recording sessions recreating '60s hits they originally played on for the soundtrack of the upcoming Shawn Bryant-produced documentary Makaha. His music began to be used more frequently in TV and film, including for the Fall 2007 season MTV Road Rules, Lisa Williams: Life Among The Dead, Scott Baio Is 46 And Pregnant as well as the Sci-Fi channel original film The Headless Horseman. An instrumental version of his song "Burning Me Out" was used as the end theme for I Know My Kid's A Star on VH-1.

In 2008 Adam completed his return to full-time music-making with a 20 track album called "Daylight Kissing Night - Adam Marsland's Greatest Hits," released on March 18, 2008. With a artist-breaking $5.99 list price and several new recordings included, the album was his first marketed exclusively to the retail chain since his Big Deal days, and was the subject of an intense word-of-mouth campaign among Adam's fan base. The CD immediately sold out across the U.S. and reached 17 on Amazon's rock chart, followed by a traditional media campaign and a 40-date national tour in the summer. Writing and rehearsals are also underway for a new studio album, his first in four years.

This episode I interview Vivian Campbell - Guitarist for Def Leppard. This iconic rock band is currently on tour supporting a new album of all original material called "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge".

Songs on this episode are a bit nostalgic for me. The opening song is from one of my favorite local bands of all time - Oil. I see members of this group around town sometimes and I always remember having such a great time listening to their stuff back in the day. I also play a couple of old Five Story Fall songs. Funny thing is, I don't even have a copy of my own record and the songs are pulled from mix demos I found in a box of random CDs.

In this episode, I wanted to showcase a few artists that will be coming to Mick's Music Bar here in Omaha. A couple of these artists will be stopping by the studio the day of their show to perform a couple in studio songs and chat about their respective tours.

But what I realized is, that locally, this doesn't do anything to help promote the show here in Omaha. So, I brought in my friend Michael Campbell (Owner of Mick's Music Bar) and we put together a show that would give you a little preview of what to expect from these fine performers. This way, you can hear the music, then see them live at the show this weekend.

I would encourage everyone who loves quality music (and if you listen to this podcast then you probably do) to check out Mick's schedule and stop in for some great performances. Many of the artists that he books are extremely popular on either coast and tour nationally, so I am hoping that we are a cool enough town to show the same kind of support. Get off your asses and hear what you have been missing.

I hope to do a few of these kinds of episodes so that all my listeners can get exposed to some new music and get a taste of the artists that are coming through town, here and across the nation.

Speaking of booze, here is the drink that changed our summer. The Tom Collins. Thanks to guest Darren Keen of the Show is the Rainbow. We found this recipe and have been drinking them ever since.

2 shots gin
1 shot lemon juice
1 tablespoon sugar
lots of ice
---put into shaker and shake the shit out of it to dissolve the sugar. Strain into collins glass filled with ice.

---Add 3 oz of club soda. Garnish with slice of lemon. Enjoy.

Darren Keen joins me in the studio with a round of Tom Collins for this latest episode and brings a demo of his new record. We talk about how this local musician did things his own way and took his act, The Show Is The Rainbow all over the world and back. This one man show consists of Keen, his computer, and a video screen. He creates all his music and performs to tracks live while projecting his own home made video behind him.

His show is known for its artistic craziness with Keen sometimes sporting a shirtless chest and a single mic while engaging the audience with his beats and thrashing movements in front of his videos as he explores the deepest connection between himself and his music. A TSITR show can, and sometimes does, involve some levels of nudity, bloodshed, altered state of minds, screaming, dancing, bewilderment and most often enjoyment.

We explore subjects such as touring, the state of our local music scene, recording, hookers, blow, and pregnant whores.

You might remember him from a little band from Arizona called the Refreshments, but for the last 10 years, it's been Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers that have been taking fans by storm. He is returning to the Big O on July 10th and once again rockin' the Waiting Room in support of "Turbo Ocho," an album where the band holed up in a house in Mexico to write and record 8 songs in 8 days.

Speaking of storms, locals may know that Omaha also got rocked by a severe storm the other night. Never have seen anything like that in my life. Fucking maddness!

The picture above is obviously not my guest Tim McMahan -- it's the singer for the Alligators, an Ohio based band featured on the show. There is actually no documented footage of the elusive "T-Mac" as he has become known in certain elitist circles...Legends abound about this writer, blogger and music aficionado, some say there are no known photos of him as he thinks pictures could "steal his soul," others say that he has been seen paling around with Warren Buffet and Bono at Sunday morning brunches at the Del, still others claim he isn't even real at all...One thing is sure, I managed to lure Tim into my studio with promises of warm delicious coffee and good conversation...The plan worked, though I was told - "No photos"...We talk about music journalism, what's on our iPods, the dirty business of interviews and play lots of great music...So sit back and enjoy learning more about Omaha's true "Man of Mystery"...

In memory:
A couple hours after publishing this episode, I received a call from my dear friend Mark Peterson who was in a band with me for several years called the Cocktosens. His wife Beth Peterson had been battling complications with a brain tumor and passed away this morning. I can't tell you how sad I am. In fact, I'm finding it difficult to believe. She was a great friend and I have to admit that after the band stopped playing we all went our own ways and spent the past few years with little contact. I enjoyed moments with Mark and Beth that I will never forget and some extremely happy times as close friends. My heart and sympathies go out to Mark and Beth's families. She will be missed and remembered for all the fun and joyful times she brought her friends and those around her.

My interview with upright bassist Lee Rocker, known world wide as one of the Stray Cats and who is now promoting his new record "Black Cat Bone." He has been touring for years and has a killer band behind him and is keeping the Rockabilly banner flying high all over the world. Hey and check out the Reader Magazine online to read all about the OEAs, a topic that I didn't really go over on this podcast as hey, MY BAND WON BEST ROCK BAND! which is actually silly to me as we haven't played that much and I thought Ladyfinger deserved it more. But it was the same ole shit, people getting awards, getting drunk (me), people leaving early, technical problems, deserved and undeserved accolades, you know, all the normal crap that comes from award ceremonies. I got wasted and got in an argument with my wife at the end of the night, so I don't remember much other than I am lucky she didn't take a crow bar to my other knee...

Episode 36 - WoW Christmas Special

A Christmas Carol!
Well, we did it. Dubbing ourselves the Empty Bottle Theatre Group, I assembled a cast of my closest friends to perform something that I have wanted to do for a long time, a live, old-time radio serial. When I asked everyone if they were interested, I got back an enthusiastic response, but since everyone was so busy this season, we had to improvise. So here is the theme, some characters were changed around and everyone got an un-edited script. It was one I found online that was used in Orson Well's original radio drama. Everyone was responsible for editing their own lines and could do whatever they wanted. We got together and ran through one scene, changed a few characters off the cuff, cracked open a few bottles of wine and ran with it.

So what you are hearing is a completely un-rehearsed, ad libbed version of A Christmas Carol. You can tell that as it nears the end of the show, we all are getting drunker and drunker...

I did very little editing and we all just had a blast. Granted MY ACCENTS ARE HORRIBLE, but it was all in good fun. You can hear us laughing in the background and several times, we almost couldn't contain ourselves as everything was done impromptu, which resulted in much spontaneous laughter.

A big thanks to Gary Dring from the Clever Little Pod podcast, my friend from the UK. He was kind enough to record the narration for the show. Thanks to Marco Rossetti for taking some great shots while we were recording, thanks to Dan Byers for helping with production and another big thanks to all my crazy friends who made this a great night of fun.

It was a tragic week last week. Our city is stunned by the violence that happened at the Westroads Mall here in Omaha Nebraska and are still trying to make some sense out of it. It's not the only time this year that our community has suffered a loss due to gun violence, but on a scale like this and with no apparent cause or motive, it is truly heartbreaking.

So many lives affected by this. Families rocked with suffering. It was a place where anyone could have been, it always seemed so safe. This show is dedicated to those suffering. I don't know if I said anything very profound, but it is a medium I have to pay tribute with.

I wish all those that lost someone this year due to senseless violence will find peace somehow...

Back from Mexico!
Greetings everyone! We are back from Mexico and are now happily married! Sorry about the long wait between podcasts - no I have not podfaded - it has just been overwhelming keeping up with work, planning the wedding trip and then actually enjoying the two weeks in Mexico. It was a great time and everyone that went had a life-changing experience. Of course when we got back, it was back to work, so catching up has been taking up all our time as well as building a huge deck in our back yard.
Whew!! Now that things are calming down, we are gearing up for our reception, but have been able to take some time out for other things - like a new episode of Worlds of Wayne!!

Get strung out -
After seeing this quartet perform live at an art auction event, I knew I had to get them on the show. All of them are under 19 years old and they are called the DeBrodiez Quartet. Not only are they great musicians, they are fun, intelligent, well spoken and are carving their mark in the local orchestral scene. Hell, they played the new Holland Center before Connor Oberst did!

On the bus with Augustana
My band Anonymous American got the opportunity to open for Augustana at Knickerbockers in Lincoln Nebraska. It was a sold out show and the guys in the band were incredibly cool to work with. I also got the chance to hang out on the tour bus and talk to a couple members about life on the road, the band and puking up wine.

My interview with Krista Detor. It was very cool. Check out part of her bio below. She will be playing in Omaha on Jan 26th at Mick's.

An up and coming Americana songwriter and performer, Krista began her performing career playing the wedding-cocktail party circuit as a sixteen year old in Los Angeles. While running at breakneck speed from the onset of adulthood ÃÂÃÂÂÃÂÂ hiding out in Louisiana shotgun shacks, a flat in Seoul, a travel trailer, thirteen different apartments and one haunted house ÃÂÃÂÂÃÂÂ sheÃÂÃÂÂÃÂÂs managed to live and perform all over the U.S. and parts of Asia. Around the turn of the century, she inexplicably found herself in the Midwest and fell in love with the rolling green hills of Southern Indiana.

With the release of her new CD, Mudshow, Krista has begun to reach new levels of critical acclaim and national attention, as she tours the U.S.

Interview with Jerzy Jung
There are two things you are probably wondering about Jerzy Jung. Wonder no more. 1.) Yes, Jerzy Jung is her real name. 2.) No, her new music, a world away from previous recordings featuring only piano and vocals, is not what you might have expected a few years ago from this NJ singer/songwriter. Raised in southern New Jersey by parents who played everything from ACDC to Marvin Gaye to Joni Mitchell in the car, Jerzy developed a hunger for all types of sounds early on.
Since her college graduation in 2004, Jerzy has been entertaining and affecting east coast audiences with her sultry yet powerful vocals, poetic lyrics, and emotive live performances. Most recently, she has taken her training to the next level as a student of renowned vocal coach Don Lawrence (Tracy Bonham, Fuel, Bono, The Rolling Stones). Her new 4-song EP, produced by Alex Houton of Wu Shu Entertainment Group, is a mix of dynamic lead vocals; airtight harmonies; clever and energetic arrangements for guitar, bass, strings, and drums; and dreamy electronic accents.

If you were a ticket agent for the VIP plane to hell who would YOU put on it. It's a little game we play when hanging around a table of good wine and great friends. Some think it's a bit morbid, but then they don't know our sense of humor. This episode I welcome the originator of "On the plane," our friend Ms. Skyelar Hawkins. She, Laurie and myself argue over who should be on the plane. Is it good podcasting? I thought so. Now it's your turn to chime in.

It's that time of year and I thought it would be nice to feature a great compilation CD called "Homeless for the Holidays - A Twisted Tale." Chock full of Omaha bands rendering their finest Christmas songs, this little holiday gem benefits the Mary McAuley Center for Women and Families. A great gift for a great cause. I even play a couple songs off of another Christmas complilation called "Christmas Tracks Too," which was recorded in 1998! That one benefited the Nebraska Humane Society. Ho Ho Ho.

I got to play an Austrailian hit man on Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff's podio book "Number One With A Bullet," then I got killed. Now I get to play a Russian henchman for the rest of the story. Right ON! This episode is almost an hour of horrifying entertainment, with an in-studio interview with P.R.I.S.M. (Paranormal Research & Investigative Studies Midwest).
